Dr. Toney provides an understanding of the role Africans played in the agricultural development of the Caribbean and how that role led to the vast accumulation of wealth by the colonizing plantation owners.

The article also provides a look at the role of African involvement in the Transatlantic Slave Trade and why that involvement occurred. The transition of the Caribbean economy from slave to paid labor and the effect on the former slaves is examined.
